As one of the time-honored materials in the history of fine watchmaking, bronze has been utilized across numerous Panerai collections. Take the recently released PAM01678 as an example: marking the first time bronze has been introduced to the Luminor series, this model largely retains the specifications of the new Luminor Marina—including a 44mm case, the iconic crown-protecting bridge, a sandwich dial, an exhibition caseback, and a robust water resistance rating of 500 meters.
The distinction lies in the bronze model, which features a gradient deep-blue dial, a titanium case back, and—for a more vintage aesthetic—the removal of the date window typically positioned at 3 o'clock. To complement the bronze case, the hour markers and hands have been meticulously finished in a bronze tone, capable of emitting a green glow in low-light conditions. The case, crown, and buckle are all crafted from bronze; however, for reasons of material strength, the case back remains titanium. A sapphire crystal case back offers a view of the timepiece's movement: the Panerai Caliber P.980. This new movement, introduced in 2025, maintains a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour while extending the power reserve to 72 hours and reintroducing the stop-seconds function.
Beyond its bronze timepieces, Panerai champions another distinctive aging technique known as Brunito eSteel™. Unlike bronze, this process retains a portion of the steel’s original color, presenting instead a grey-black aesthetic marked by the "patina of time." The key advantage of this technique lies in its relative visual stability; unlike bronze, it does not undergo drastic color shifts through oxidation. Furthermore, it is more hypoallergenic and skin-friendly, making it highly suitable for daily wear. The principle behind crafting a Brunito eSteel™ case is straightforward. In essence, the process begins by subjecting the steel case to PVD treatment to achieve a deep black finish. Artisans then manually hand-finish the case, selectively removing portions of the PVD coating to create a final effect where black and steel tones intricately intertwine—a look further enriched by visible brushed textures and fine striations upon close inspection. The inaugural Brunito eSteel™ timepiece is the Radiomir PAM01349, released in 2023. This model features a 45mm-diameter case—a size that lends it a more refined aesthetic compared to the traditional 47mm dimensions typical of the Radiomir collection. Beyond this adjustment in size, a defining characteristic of the PAM01349 is its "California Dial." This design dates back to the 1930s and is distinguished by a dial layout featuring Roman numerals on the upper half and Arabic numerals on the lower half. Although Panerai was neither the inventor of the California dial nor the first brand to utilize it, it remains one of the few manufacturers today still dedicated to promoting and incorporating this style—a design that has since become deeply intertwined with the brand's identity.
